The World of Work: A Marine Biologist talks about their job

Runnymede students interviewed their friends and families to find out what jobs they do and how they feel about them.

What is your job title?

Marine biologist.

What does your job entail?

Studying and analyzing species from all over the ocean.

Where did you study?

Universitat de Barcelona.

Was this always something you wanted to do?

Actually, no, I initially wanted to study medicine, but I took a marine biologist course once, instantly fell in love with it, and decided to study it in college.

Did you do anything else before this?

No formal jobs, no.

What is your favourite part of this job?

My favorite part is venturing into the unknown, being able to explore and discover new things makes me feel like the adventurous child I once was.

My least favorite part is the cold. Oh, the cold… Sometimes, even with all the gear on, I’ve felt like I was going to die from hypothermia, it doesn’t happen so often anymore, but there was a time when I’d feel this horrid sensation every other day.

What is your least favourite part of the job?

It’s no walk in the park. On top of studying and researching, the job is extremely physically demanding. We have incessant mandatory exercises at work and I still find myself breathless after a long swim underwater.
